Our 2020 Light up a Life
“At St Margaret’s Hospice we’d been seeing a steady decline in responses and income for our annual Light up a Life appeal; we’d even considered dropping the campaign from our portfolio. Then the pandemic hit; suddenly it felt like LUAL would be the right message to offer our community at the end of this year of loss, isolation and fear.
But there was nervousness and a lack of understanding internally: why had our Light up a Life proposition been failing? And, how could we turn it around, giving our community comfort and a way to celebrate and remember loved ones in a year when so much we took for granted was taken away?
I attended Pebblebeach’s Light up a Life webinar, which spoke to me in terms of ways we could adapt LUAL in a pandemic. Although we usually produce appeals in-house, we decided to work with Pebblebeach to create our LUAL package.
Together we created a beautiful pack and a Light up a Life @ Home pack and in-house we developed a Light up a Life night sky on our website as our digital offering. We’ve been thrilled with the response across all elements and more than doubled our previous year’s LUAL income, engaging new supporters. I can tell you that LUAL in 2021 won’t be a dilemma for us – we have reinvigorated a failing product thanks to the Pebblebeach team!”

Our experience with Pebblebeach
“Amy and Naomi held my hand through every stage of the development process – from initial conversations about the look and feel, to creating really tailored copy and inserts for the packs, to digging deep into our data so we could reach the right people and maximise our returns. We worked together in a really structured way, with clear schedule, and never missed a deadline – I really appreciated that. And I’ll namecheck Amy again for her words of wisdom based on live experience, which helped me make important decisions along the way.”
